Tiny tubes could bring big savings

Just when you thought I only wrote about information technology, along comes tiny tubes could bring big savings on fuel bills in today’s Guardian newspaper to prove otherwise. These images of carbon nanotubes help underline why I found this a fascinating topic and, better still, it was also an opportunity to dust off my science degree. If you want to know more about carbon nanotubes, then this Wikipedia entry is a good place to start.

Although I concentrated on carbon nanotubes and central heating boilers, there are other specialist applications being investigated by the team at Leeds University. If nanofluids transfer heat more efficiently, then use in surgery for heating and cooling is also a possibility. And to return to information technology, cooling down all those hot processor chips may yet happen too.
