Want a new HTML editor?
If you’ve been looking for a new open source HTML editor, then check out Nvu. It’s simple enough for beginners yet contains features like a cascading style sheet editor for the more expert. Those of you who miss Microsoft FrontPage Express (bundled free with Windows 98, it eventually fell by the wayside in the move to Windows XP) might find Nvu a good replacement. HTML and CSS newbies may try this interactive site for help too.
I’ve been checking out Nvu beta version 0.7 for the last few days. Version 0.8 was released yesterday ahead of a version 1.0 in a few weeks time. Warning: Beta means “test” so backup your stuff before installation (you are backing up regularly, aren’t you?) or use a spare PC.
But the best thing about Nvu is that, like Firefox and Thunderbird, it runs under Windows, Linux and Mac OSX. If you’re thinking of Linux (or, like me, already using Linux alongside Windows), then you have the choice. Running software in Windows that also works in Linux eases the transition.
One more bit of good news: Firefox has now passed 22 million downloads.
