BT’s plan for quicker connection

April 17th, 2008 No comments

BT’s plan for quicker connection, my cover story in the technology Guardian section today, looks at ADSL2+. Over the next three years, the upgrade from ADSL will boost broadband from 8 Mbps to 24 Mbps – if you’re lucky. This story first appeared in yesterday’s online-only news section.

24 April: An interesting letter in technology Guardian from a disabled 84-year-old pensioner in Oxfordshire today. The full letter (correspondence is often edited for space reasons) comments about broadband reliability: “This has now reached the point that it [broadband] is rarely available at weekends, and access on weekdays is hit and miss. Even at this very poor level of service, I am more and more dependent on it. I have given up complaining to BT about this, because the last time I complained, the response was “OK, if it’s that bad, we’ll disconnect you”. I protested, and BT relented, though warning me that it has “no present plans” to upgrade my exchange to cure the problem.”

BT is now looking into it.
